How to configure and install postfix on Ubuntu 12.04

I’ve written this tutorial as a spin off from my larger tutorial on how to install Zarafa on Ubuntu 12.04. The reason for the spin off is simple, the tutorial became to big. I know that people stop reading when they see to much text.

For this reason I created this tutorial, however, if you don’t want to install Zarafa but just postfix, this tutorial will help you as well.

apt-get install postfix postfix-mysql postfix-pcre postfix-cdb

This will install the required packages. When you install these packages, the Configurator will pop up and allow you to configure postfix. I’m going to configure postfix in it’s full blown version, by this I mean that I won’t be relaying the mail but actually sending the mail.

Backup and restore (migrate) Zarafa Mail server

Today’s tutorial will be about the backup and restore of a Zarafa mailserver. Many people describe how to backup the Zarafa mailserver, however, few people describe how to restore it. In my opinion, backup and restore should be seen as an individual procedure. If you’re using the Open Source edition in a corporate environment, make sure that your backups are up and running decently!

Most people verify their backup plan, they check if the backups are created. However, very few people actually try to recover/restore from the backup files. This tutorial will explain 2 procedures, how to backup stuff and how to migrate/restore it.

Ubuntu/ Debian 6.0.5 OpenVZ locales errors

update: It seems that Ubuntu has the same problem + same fix

I’ve been using OpenVZ as a new virtualisation tool. OpenVZ has a lot of good things, but also a lot of bad things. I’m not going to compare it against other ways.

As I installed my servers I noticed that I had some errors.

OpenVZ Debian 6.0.5 install Exim4 mail server

Since I recently migrated to a new service provider, kimsufi. I have a lot of new stuff to write about. One of the first things that I needed was a mail server. When I ran my services at home, I could just use the mail server from my Internet provider (smarthost), however, today this isn’t true anymore.

A mail server is a server that can send/receive mail. In my case, it will only be sending emails, at least for now, keep steady for a new migration tutorial with Zarafa. This should be finished withing the next two weeks. I’m installing this mail server on my web server. This makes sure that when somebody posts something, I’m getting a notification. And so should you get one once someone answered on your comment.

Before we can install exim4 on our server, we have to remove sendmail. We can do this with the following command:

September brings a lot of changes!

September always brought many changes, for example, new class, new teachers, new laws, etc. This is always quite exciting. When I finished school, I thought that that would stop.

Boy, was I wrong! (Luckily). I joined the Google Corporation as some of you might now. This is one of the things that recently changed. Besides that, I moved to my new apartment and I bought a new car. If that wasn’t enough, I’m now working on a MacBook PRO instead of my Linux Desktop.

Due to all these changes, and the fact that my desk is still, well, in parts, I’ve been quite inactive on my blog. In the next couple of days, I hope to assemble my desk, install my desktop and write some more tutorials!

My inactivity should change within the next couple of weeks!

Stay tuned for some new things:

  • Proxmox
  • Site moves to a new provider
  • Site2site vpn with openvpn
  • OpenVZ and KVM
  • many many more!

If you have any questions, feel free to send me an email!
